Embracing Color in interior decorating

Updated: Nov 22

The fact that we can see in color is an awesome and amazing gift from our creator. And like any gift I receive, I don't want to take it for granted. I love an array of color in fashion, home decor and everything and anything in between. Sometimes I have to control myself, pump my figurative breaks, because I can indulge in too many colors. And I want to be balanced, especially when I am designing a space.

Have you ever heard someone say, that they love color, but they are afraid of it? Maybe you said it too. Well I am hear to tell you, as a true fan and enthusiasts of color. There is absolutely nothing to fear. Color was created for our enjoyment and pleasure. This fear, is nothing more than a figment of your own imagination. Most often people are just afraid of how others will view their color choices. They fear choosing color, out of criticism from other folks. So they stick to what is socially excepted from their friends or associates.

Am I on to something? Speaking your truth? Sounds familiar, sounds like you?

Well if you want to conquer your color fear, let's do it together. I must warn you though! You may have to work on embracing being yourself first. Let go of what others think. I can't help you with that. Well first, like any fear someone is trying to conquer. You must admit that you have fear, fear of color. If you answer Yes, even to1 of the next following questions, then you my friend, are indeed, fearful of color. And I'm sorry, that I had to be the one to break it to you.

Better to know, then not. Right?

Do you fear what people will think if you wear your favorite color or different colors?

Are you afraid to paint a space in your house a color that most people wouldn't dare try?

Do you stick to neutral colors like tans and whites, only because it feels safe?

If you answered even yes, to 1 of those questions. You probably got it. Fear of color. But hold tight, there's a cure.

Now obviously, you don't fear all color just those primary colors. Colors like: Red, Blue, Orange, Yellow and Green.

Well to start using color in your home. You can start slowly. Start by adding color in places such as throw pillows, wall art, curtains, rugs and bedding.

Using just 2 primary colors first, this will test how comfortable you are. Give it a few months. You will probably feel that the colors you choose are energizing. They may make you feel happier. You may start to feel more confident and ready to move on to painting a wall. Yes just one wall first.

Let's not jump ahead. Pick a feature wall and start with that. If you feel pretty confident after a few months, you are on your way. Embracing colors may not happen over night, and can be a process. However, it's easy once you have removed doubt and fear of criticism. Take your colors places, whether it's in your decor, or your style of dress. One thing is for sure, embracing color, it's a gift that can brighten your view on just about anything. I designed all the pictures you see in this article and I always use big bold colors. They make me smile even brighter!
